Jamie Farrell has just lost a basketball game for his team.In the gym, his teammates tiptoed so that they wouldn’t cut their feet from the shattered glass from a glass bottle that Jamie just dropped. He complains to his friend, Froggy Williams, how his life seems to be turning upside down.

In the hallway, they see a poster for the junior dance, and Jamie insists that he’s going to ask Celia Evora to the dance. Froggy thinks she is out of Jamie’s league.

Things get worse for Jamie. He fails his Bio project when his teacher doesn’t believe him dropping lab slides accidently.Maurice DuPre wants to kill him for throwing a still filled milk carton onto his lap instead of the trash bin he was aiming. He runs away from a store because he couldn’t pay for the chips he already started eating since he couldn’t get to his locker where his wallet is as he was hiding from Maurice. Then, Jamie went home and banged his leg against a dumbbell trying to pick up the phone. When he picks up the phone, his teacher tells him he has failed his English test and close to failing for the whole class.

Jamie feels his life has ended, until his sister, Ellen, gives him an egg and picks on him.She leaves, and Jamie throws the egg aiming at the sink.To his surprise, the egg has landed perfectly in an egg carton. He calls Froggy, who told him earlier he might be on some bad streak and that it’ll go away after some amazing great event, and tells him this might be the start of a good streak. They both count the bad things that happened to him, and they concluded that Jamie has six good fortunes left.Jamie happily tells he plans to use one of these fortunes to ask Celia out, which Froggy now believes will happen.

However, he fears his luck might run out too quickly.Next day, he goes to school and surprisingly well on a math test.Jamie luckily gets a soda from a soda machine that wouldn’t work for anybody else.He luckily figures out Celia is allergic to roses from Celia’s mother picking up his call before he would give Celia the roses he bought earlier.Finding he more needs money for a date with Celia, his dad gives him a talk about drugs and gives him $100 to keep him from feeling deprived. He throws a piece of paper into the trash, and Froggy tells him this is considered another wasted fortune.

He believes only luck will get them to win against Carver basketball team, and he hopes it’s not his last remaining luck.Jamie’s team is holding well until by the end where they have only four people playing on the court and need Jamie, who has been benched for his swollen ankle. The least he wanted was to make a last shot winning the game.He tries to pass the ball to one of his teammates, but the ball sadly for him makes it through the net.Jamie wins the basketball game for his team, and everybody in his school is praising him.No praise helps him feel better as he waits for his bad streak to start again.

Then, Celia surprisingly asks Jamie out to the dance. She explains she too has been on a lucky streak. Now, she could go to the dance with her mom’s permission to go to the dance with Jamie, since her mom thinks Jamie is a nice boy for trying to call her to see if she’s allergic to roses.

Froggy later meets Jamie, and Jamie shares his enlightenment “that the whole world is on a streak.”
